Welcome to my first blog post of the 2014-2015 school year! I am excited to use this site as a platform for discussion, information, and excitement about visual art at Windy Hill Middle School (WHMS) in Owings, MD. My goal is to update the blog at least once per week to let you know what's going on in my classroom, what projects we're working on, and how you can help your child be more successful in my classroom! I will provide links to other helpful sites, videos, and display student work as well.
I'd like to tell you a little bit about myself, especially for those of you who are new to the school this year. This is my second year teaching at WHMS, but my 9th year teaching art. I taught at Huntingtown Elementary School in Calvert County for 5 years, and also taught at Westlake HIgh School in Charles County for 2 years prior to that. While I have enjoyed teaching all grade levels, I have to say that middle school is my favorite! (I swear no one paid me to say that!) I enjoy watching my students create, imagine, and collaborate and I hope that you will get enjoyment from this glimpse into our classroom as well! My areas of specialty include painting and ceramics; however, my goal is and has been to give students a variety of media to work with. Last year, I incorporated printmaking, drawing, painting, ceramics, collage, and even repousse (metal-working)! I am excited to work on all of this and more this school year!
We are fortunate to have received a grant from the Arts Council of Calvert County that will allow us to invite pastel artist Greg Johannesen into our classroom for the 8th grade art students this year. He will be here this Fall and will instruct students on local landscape drawing in pastels. I look forward to expanding our students' horizons and allowing them to use their surroundings as inspiration for beautiful artwork! Check back soon for more updates. Thanks for stopping by.
