The month of March is Youth Art Month in Calvert County. Several of our 7th and 8th grade students will have work on display at the Calvert Marine Museum in Solomons. In addition, you can see a variety of artwork from other schools in Calvert County that reflect the theme "Portraits of the Chesapeake." The opening reception for the exhibit is this Friday, March 4th from 5-6:30pm and the work will be on display throughout the month of March. Be sure to stop by and check it out!
8th graders have completed a clay project in which they used the slab technique to create a mug. They also reviewed the score and slip process of attaching clay pieces together to create unique handles and other details on their mugs. There are some examples below. They are currently working on a still life assignment where they can use realism, photo-realism, cubism, or fauvism to create a unique version of the subject pictured below (guitar with candle holder and flowers). They will be utilizing the elements of value, space, and texture and the principles of balance and unity to execute their final copy. I am excited to share their finished products with you when they're finished.
7th graders have been very busy. They've completed a project inspired by Gustav Klimt using scratch-board, have studied the Principles of Design, and just finished a low-relief clay tile. They are in the process of glazing their tiles and have just begun a name design using radial balance. I hope to get in a few more assignments before Spring break gets here.
6th graders also recently created a clay sculpture using the score and slip technique. They started with two pinch pots and then added details to create their own unique sculpture. You can see their work drying on our shelves below. They will be glazing them within the next two weeks. In the meantime, they have begun learning about color theory. We are studying the color wheel, color values and color schemes. After practicing with these, they will create a name design using 4 different color schemes.
